Steam ended 2024 with a record: nearly 19,000 games were released, 4,000 more than the previous year. However, 80% of these titles attracted few players and even fewer sales. Steam, once a haven for digital gaming, has become a crowded platform where breaking through is increasingly difficult.

The magic of “limited.” There’s an explanation for this trend, tied to the lure of easy money. A few years ago, Steam allowed games to include player incentives like stickers, achievements, and badges. These rewards gave games a collectible appeal, encouraging users to explore various titles to earn them.

The trash pile. This shift led many developers to release basic, low-cost games designed to let players quickly earn achievements and badges, boosting their stats. In response, Valve introduced a “limited” format for games in its store, restricting features like achievements.

The best games leave. To exit the “limited” category, games must meet certain sales and player engagement thresholds, though Valve hasn’t disclosed the exact criteria. According to Bill Young, Twitch’s games division director, the percentage of games in this limited category has steadily risen—from 33% in 2018 to 66%, and now 79% in 2024.

Many games, little impact. Data from SteamDB shows that 18,992 games were released on Steam in 2024. Of those, 14,951 remained in the “limited” category, indicating they failed to achieve significant sales or player engagement by Valve’s standards. While these standards may be strict, they also reflect an industry overwhelmed by excessive game production.

Too many games, too little time. This is a long-standing issue for gamers and the industry alike. With 50 to 60 new games arriving on Steam daily, players struggle to keep up. The problem is compounded by overly long games filled with unnecessary content. While Steam’s gatekeeping may seem stringent, the underlying issue remains: There may simply be too many games to accommodate.

If there’s a game many gamers have been waiting for, it’s Black Myth Wukong. Announced several years ago and shown as one of the great exponents of the graphics that Unreal Engine 5 can offer, Black Myth Wukong has just landed on consoles and PCs. It did so just a few hours ago, but it didn’t need more to make history in video games.

What happened? Black Myth Wukong has made a fast buck, as expected. Pre-downloads totaled 53 TB of bandwidth on Steam, surpassing Cyberpunk 2077’s record of 51 TB in 2020. Not surprisingly, with such a strong launch, the game has taken the top spot on Steam’s most-played games chart.

What’s Black Myth Wukong about? Game Science was inspired by the book Journey to the West, published in the 16th century, to make this game. It’s one of the great classic Chinese novels. Journey to the West is to China, what Don Quixote is to Spain. In the game, we control a character inspired by Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) and face enemies and bosses. It’s a mixture of action RPG and fantasy with Souls that has been very well received and has managed to go down in the history of video games.

Steam has become practically synonymous with PC gaming. Do you play PC games? You probably have Steam. Except for some exclusive titles, chances are that a PC game will be available on Steam because the reality is that Valve’s platform is complete and has everything. Well, no, not everything. It doesn’t have, for instance, a tool to capture the screen and record our games. That was something that gamers left to third-party tools like Nvidia...

…until now.

Game recording is coming to Steam. Valve has recently announced the launch of its own Game Recording tool, although it’s still a beta version. As such, you’ll need to use the Steam Client Beta to access it.

Follow these steps to opt-in to the Steam Client Beta:

Open Steam > Steam > Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation > Steam Beta Update

As with any beta version, it’s important to note that there may be bugs and little things that don’t work.

Recording games. The game recording feature works in the background and can be configured in several ways. For instance, you can set it to record for a specific duration or stop when the recording reaches a certain file size. Additionally, it allows you to rewind during gameplay to recall what an NPC said or review a particular move made by an Elden Ring boss before it defeated you for the 25th time in an hour. So far, nothing unusual.

A bonus. More interestingly, the Steam recorder comes with some very useful tools that will greatly benefit those who enjoy capturing, editing, and sharing gameplays. One of the most notable tools is the Steam Timeline, which automatically creates event markers during gameplay for important moments, such as a headshot in Counter-Strike or a death in Dota 2.

This makes editing gameplay recordings much easier, as you can clearly separate different sections of the game when using Steam Timeline.

If you want to access and edit the file using Premiere, CapCut, or any other video editing tool, you simply need to export it as an MP4. It doesn’t restrict you to Steam games either, as the recorder will work with all games compatible with Steam’s overlay interface. And yes, before you ask, it’s also compatible with Steam Deck.

We’ll explain how to check a Steam game’s price history. Whether you’re thinking of buying a game or want to see how good a discount on the platform really is, there’s a tool you can use to see how the price of a game has changed over time.

Steam itself doesn’t provide this information, so you’ll need to use SteamDB. This website displays a game’s price history in a graph format. You'll see the price at that particular time in history by clicking on a specific point in the graph’s green line. For your convenience, you can see the prices in all the different currencies available on Steam.

Knowing a game’s price history can help you make better decisions. For instance, if you see that a game’s price has “dropped” to $20 but was previously sold at $15, you’ll know that the current offer is not the best deal. Similarly, if you notice that a game was previously sold at $50 and is now available at a lower price, you can be sure that the discount is worth it, and you should use the opportunity.

There’s always been a certain disconnect between what critics say and what the public thinks about media, including video games. To explore this, we conducted an experiment comparing the best PC games according to critics and users on Metacritic.

We’ve selected the best PC games of all time, a total of 47 masterpieces, according to critics and users. There’s little agreement between the two parties. However, we believe that each game has its own merits and you should try them at least once.

How Metacritic Rates Video Games

Metacritic is a popular website launched in 2001 that aggregates reviews for movies, music, books, and video games. In recent years, checking a game’s Metascore, which is the average score from critics, has become fairly common among users before buying the product.

However, critics are not always unbiased, and some may even be influenced by bribes. In addition, some websites may be given more weight in the average score than others. Therefore, it’s important to also consider the user reviews, which are separate from the critics’ scores.

The scores from both critics and users can yield very different results, but they are equally valuable.

It’s hard to recall a recent game that has won over the gaming community as strongly as Disco Elysium. What makes its achievement all the greater is that some might consider it a difficult game to play, with heavy reliance on text, philosophy, and dice. But despite everything that might put you off, you should definitely try it sooner or later.

After being crowned the “best PC game ever”, Half-Life 2 had the daunting task of keeping the bar equally high. Its place on this list shows to what extent it was successful, becoming one of the titles that set the path to be followed by the industry in the following years in terms of graphics, physics, artificial intelligence, and, above all, narrative.

Becoming the second game ever to sell more physical copies, only behind a phenomenon like Wii Sports (and without taking into account the digital ones, which would widen the gap), GTA V has become a mass phenomenon that, after 11 years, still tops the sales charts. It’s not there by luck, of course. It’s one of the most attractive and fun open-world games ever created.
