Steam ended 2024 with a record: nearly 19,000 games were released, 4,000 more than the previous year. However, 80% of these titles attracted few players and even fewer sales. Steam, once a haven for digital gaming, has become a crowded platform where breaking through is increasingly difficult.

The magic of “limited.” There’s an explanation for this trend, tied to the lure of easy money. A few years ago, Steam allowed games to include player incentives like stickers, achievements, and badges. These rewards gave games a collectible appeal, encouraging users to explore various titles to earn them.

If there’s a game many gamers have been waiting for, it’s Black Myth Wukong. Announced several years ago and shown as one of the great exponents of the graphics that Unreal Engine 5 can offer, Black Myth Wukong has just landed on consoles and PCs. It did so just a few hours ago, but it didn’t need more to make history in video games.

What happened? Black Myth Wukong has made a fast buck, as expected. Pre-downloads totaled 53 TB of bandwidth on Steam, surpassing Cyberpunk 2077’s record of 51 TB in 2020. Not surprisingly, with such a strong launch, the game has taken the top spot on Steam’s most-played games chart.

The record. Black Myth Wukong only needed a few hours to become the fourth most-played game in Steam’s history. It surpassed Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Dota 2, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The number of players grew to 2,223,179 throughout the day, making it the second-most-played game in Steam history.

Steam has become practically synonymous with PC gaming. Do you play PC games? You probably have Steam. Except for some exclusive titles, chances are that a PC game will be available on Steam because the reality is that Valve’s platform is complete and has everything. Well, no, not everything. It doesn’t have, for instance, a tool to capture the screen and record our games. That was something that gamers left to third-party tools like Nvidia...

…until now.

Game recording is coming to Steam. Valve has recently announced the launch of its own Game Recording tool, although it’s still a beta version. As such, you’ll need to use the Steam Client Beta to access it.

Follow these steps to opt-in to the Steam Client Beta:

Open Steam > Steam > Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation > Steam Beta Update

As with any beta version, it’s important to note that there may be bugs and little things that don’t work.

Recording games. The game recording feature works in the background and can be configured in several ways. For instance, you can set it to record for a specific duration or stop when the recording reaches a certain file size. Additionally, it allows you to rewind during gameplay to recall what an NPC said or review a particular move made by an Elden Ring boss before it defeated you for the 25th time in an hour. So far, nothing unusual.

A bonus. More interestingly, the Steam recorder comes with some very useful tools that will greatly benefit those who enjoy capturing, editing, and sharing gameplays. You'll see the price at that particular time in history by clicking on a specific point in the graph’s green line. For your convenience, you can see the prices in all the different currencies available on Steam.

Knowing a game’s price history can help you make better decisions. For instance, if you see that a game’s price has “dropped” to $20 but was previously sold at $15, you’ll know that the current offer is not the best deal. Similarly, if you notice that a game was previously sold at $50 and is now available at a lower price, you can be sure that the discount is worth it, and you should use the opportunity.

View the Price Evolution of a Steam Game

First, go to SteamDB.info, a Steam game database with all sorts of information. Once you’re there, you’ll see a list of the most popular and played games. To check the price of a specific game, type the title in the search bar located in the upper left corner of the site. Alternatively, click on the game’s name in the lists that you’ll see on the main screen.

As you type the game title, a list of matching games and DLCs will appear. Simply click on the game you want to check the price of.

This will take you to the game’s page, where you’ll find a list of its price history. To check the price in your preferred currency, click on the Set your currency drop-down menu located at the top right of the list, and select the currency you want to use.

Once you’ve selected your preferred currency, scroll down to view a graph that shows the game’s price history. You can view the game’s price history since it first launched or specify a time frame (last 6 months or last year). This way, you can see how the game’s price has evolved over time.

On the graph, the highest price is at the top, which is usually the usual price, and below it are the occasional sales and the lowest prices.
