I couldn't decide between my passion for writing and my need to be up to date with the latest technology, so I decided to combine both into a career that I enjoy. You'll likely find me by a keyboard, surrounded by phones and a half-finished cup of coffee.

I've been playing with smartphones for over 20 years and writing about them for more than 10 years. I started writing about them at Xataka and leaving my modest footprint on the site in 2019.

Connecting to a remote device, seeing what another user is doing, and even controlling it from afar are three key features of remote desktop apps. One popular tool is TeamViewer. However, there are free and open source alternatives that are equally, if not more, effective. RustDesk works exceptionally well and even allows to simulate an Android environment on an iPhone.

There are many scenarios where remotely connecting to another device proves to be very useful. For instance, you can use it to help someone who wasn’t physically with you. It’s also ideal for controlling a phone you left at home to use it as a security camera. Additionally, remote desktop apps are useful for easily transferring files between your phone and your computer.

For that, RustDesk is an excellent choice.

RustDesk Is Compatible With Android, iPhone, Computers, and Even the Web

RustDesk interface

As a versatile remote connection tool, RustDesk allows you to do almost anything you can imagine. For instance, you can control your Android device from an iPhone and view your phone’s screen on your computer. You can even remotely monitor your home by simply using your phone as a security camera.

RustDesk is multiplatform, lightweight, ad-free, completely free of charge, and developed with open source code. Additionally, it receives frequent updates, meaning RustDesk is actively maintained and evolving.

Wondering how it works? RustDesk offers surprisingly good quality and connection stability. It’s also incredibly easy to start using it. You may experience some latency. However, that largely depends on your network stability and whether you’re using Wi-Fi or mobile data.

To connect two devices using RustDesk, simply open the app on one device, start the server, and copy the code displayed on the screen. Then, enter this code on the phone or computer that will act as the viewer. Once the connection is accepted, the screen of one device is mirrored on the other, allowing you to control the remote device and send files to it.

RustDesk enables remote control of another device, but special permissions are required.

The app is very user-friendly, secure, and includes warnings for improper use. An initial message alerts you when setting up a remote desktop for the first time. Whenever you receive a link to connect to someone else’s device, you’ll need to accept special permissions to manage it remotely.

TeamViewer’s Best Alternative Is Totally Free

RustDesk

RustDesk is one of many excellent alternatives to cross-platform remote desktop apps. While its pricing is a notable advantage, I wouldn’t recommend it solely for that reason. The overall experience is very good. It’s all you need from an app like this. You simply need to install RustDesk on both devices, open the apps, and connect them with ease.

RustDesk also allows for more advanced use. You can restrict connections, transfer documents, and even remotely install apps. The fact that it’s open source makes it an even better option worth considering.

If you’re interested in using RustDesk on Android, you can download the APK from the company’s GitHub page. iPhone users will find the app on the App Store. Additionally, you can view devices remotely through your web browser, which is quite impressive.
