Leaks are a serious issue for big companies, giving competitors insights into strategy and allowing them to react early.
At Meta, leaks of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s comments in staff meetings have been a recurring issue. In a recent meeting, he addressed the problem—only for his remarks to be leaked yet again.
Leaked Statements
Last week, Zuckerberg met with employees to answer questions and warned that 2025 will be an intense year for Meta, advising them to “buckle up.”
But according to The Verge, something had changed. Meta executives, including Zuckerberg, were now avoiding top-voted or sensitive questions. “We will skip questions that we expect might be unproductive if they leak,” Zuckerberg said.
He expressed frustration that his comments were being reported as if he had made them directly to the press. “We try to be really open and then everything I say leaks. It sucks,” he complained.
Ironically, his remarks were leaked almost immediately.
The Hunt for the Mole
Meta’s security team is cracking down. In a memo to employees—also leaked—Meta’s chief information security officer Guy Rosen warned that the company would fire those responsible. “We take leaks seriously and will take action,” Rosen said.
“When information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact. Our teams become demoralized and we all waste time that is better spent working on our products and toward our goals and mission,” he added.
The memo noted that some employees had already been fired for leaking confidential documents, though it didn’t specify their roles.
The rise in leaks appears to be linked to internal discontent over Meta’s recent political ties. Reports suggest Zuckerberg is shifting his focus from Silicon Valley to Washington, deepening his connections to President Donald Trump and other political power players, according to Fortune.
