Anthropic has emerged as a significant player in the AI sector, with some suggesting it could be Apple’s strategy to compete with OpenAI and Google. One notable area where its assistant Claude has faced challenges is in voice mode. The AI company has finally introduced this feature, which its main competitors have already integrated, on mobile. With this addition, Claude takes a crucial step toward competing on equal footing.

Claude can speak. Claude’s new voice mode enables full spoken conversations through its mobile app, available for both iOS and Android. This isn’t limited to just dictating commands. Claude responds verbally and displays key points on the screen while speaking. The AI chatbot also maintains conversational context even when switching between voice and text.

This feature will be rolled out to all users, including those on the free version, in the coming weeks. However, paid plans offer more voice messages per session and access to advanced features. These include integration with Google Calendar, Gmail, and Google Docs. The integration with Google Docs is exclusive to business users.

The app features several controls, including options to interrupt Claude’s responses, send spoken messages, and easily switch between voice and text modes. Additionally, users can choose from different voices to personalize their experience. All conversations are saved, similar to text chats. The chatbot also provides a summary of your voice transcriptions.

Claude's voice mode

Designed for those with busy hands, quick ideas, and spoken creativity. Anthropic’s voice feature is aimed at scenarios such as organizing your day while having breakfast or brainstorming while walking or cooking. The goal of voice mode is to eliminate the need for a keyboard, which can slow down your thought process. It’s particularly beneficial for creators and professionals who need to record ideas or practice interviews while on the move.

To ensure a smooth experience, Anthropic recommends using the system in low-noise environments with a stable Internet connection. Additionally, the company has introduced security measures. Voices are predefined to prevent imitations, and the model avoids reproducing exact text to reduce the risk of impersonation.

Comparison is inevitable. The introduction of voice mode in Claude comes at a time when expectations are higher than ever. OpenAI has long touted its advanced voice mode, similar to Spike Jonze’s movie Her. Other competitors, such as Google with Gemini Live and xAI with its Grok app, have also introduced dedicated voice modes.
