Google is making significant changes to its HR strategy. The company recently laid off hundreds of employees across its Pixel and Android divisions. A few days later, it’s requiring employees to return to the office and no longer allows remote work.
The shift away from flexible work arrangements brought on by the pandemic is becoming more pronounced, and many companies push for a return to in-office work.
Google emphasizes that working from the office is essential for innovation and solving complex problems. Courtenay Mencini, a spokesperson for Google, told CNBC that this new policy will be implemented at the team level rather than company-wide. However, she didn’t specify which teams would be required to return to the office.
This strategic decision could jeopardize the arrangement for many employees, who are now expected to return to the office at least three days a week.
The concern goes beyond issues of comfort or productivity. Many employees who had remote contracts relocated to different cities. With the option for remote work, many people have moved back to their hometowns or opted for more affordable areas.
According to internal documents, Google has asked several employees to choose between a hybrid job arrangement or a voluntary exit package.
For those who opt for the hybrid job, employees living more than 50 miles from an office are offered financial assistance to relocate within that distance.
In some cases, the company will maintain existing remote contracts. However, employees who wish to apply for new positions within the company will need to comply with the new policies.
Google believes that complex problems are best addressed through face-to-face interactions, with teams collaborating in person. Funnily enough, despite being a tech company that provides many tools to enhance productivity, Google is prioritizing in-office work.
