Limiting political content from accounts you don’t follow on Instagram and Threads is easier than you think. By doing so, you can prevent political messages on both social media platforms from flooding your algorithm.
While Instagram and Threads block this content by default, you can manage it yourself. You can follow these steps if you want to enable political content or check to see it’s actually blocked.
How to Limit Political Content on Instagram
To check or enable the political content filter on Instagram, go to the app’s Settings and activity. Then, look for the Suggested content section.
When you click on the Suggested content option, you’ll see a screen where you can manage the content from accounts you don’t follow on Instagram. In other words, it's where you can personalize the recommendations that appear in your feed. In this section, click on the Political content tab, which is located almost at the bottom.
You’ll then see a screen where you can enable the option Limit political content from people you don’t follow. Instagram usually enables it by default, but it never hurts to check.
How to Limit Political Content on Threads
Threads has started rolling out this option as well. You’ll know when the app notifies you that you can now limit the volume of political content from accounts you don’t follow. If you tap on that notification, you can manage it. Otherwise, go to the app’s Settings, click on Privacy, and then go to Other privacy settings.
By doing so, the app will redirect you to Instagram, where you can follow the steps described above. Limiting political content on Instagram also limits political content on Threads.
