I've been in media for over a decade, but I've been marveling at the possibilities that technology brings us much longer. I believe we live in a world where the digital revolution is changing everything and that Xataka is the best place to write about it.

Siri continues to serve its purpose, but it hasn’t seen any significant evolutionary leaps in quite some time. The advancements in generative artificial intelligence in recent years have transformed the landscape. They’ve showcased new possibilities and raised user expectations for a more fluid and intuitive Siri.

This idea began to take shape at WWDC 2024 when Apple introduced Apple Intelligence. Among its many features, one stood out: a redesigned Siri. The revamped version promised to be capable of understanding user queries based not only on spoken words but also on what’s displayed on the screen and how owners use their iPhones. It seemed that Siri was finally going to make a significant leap forward.

A pending leap. In March, Apple acknowledged that these new features wouldn’t be ready until 2026. During Monday’s WWDC 2025, there were no updates. In a subsequent interview, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior VP of software engineering, explained that although a working version exists, the company chose not to release it.

The reason is that it didn’t meet Apple’s high standards of reliability:

“It would’ve been more disappointing to ship something that didn’t hit our quality standard, that had an error rate that we felt was unacceptable. We made what we thought was the best decision. I’d make it again.”

New launch window: spring 2026. While there hasn’t been any official announcement, Bloomberg reports that Apple has set an internal target for spring 2026. According to sources consulted by expert Mark Gurman, the company plans to launch the new Siri alongside iOS 26.4, which typically arrives in March. This timeline aligns with previous years, as seen with iOS 17.4 and iOS 18.4.

However, this schedule isn’t set in stone. The outlet indicates that the timeline will depend on how development progresses in the coming weeks. If progress remains strong, Apple may preview the new Siri alongside the new iPhone this fall. As of now, no final decisions have been made.

Technical challenges. The new Siri is more than just an update, and it’ll come with significant internal changes. According to Bloomberg, one main challenge has been the coexistence of two architectures. On one hand, there’s the classic Siri system, which continues to handle basic tasks such as setting timers. On the other hand, the new AI engine has been designed to manage more advanced functions.

The redesign has also resulted in shifts within the organizational structure. John Giannandrea, who was previously in charge of Siri, has lost oversight of consumer products. The project is now under the leadership of Mike Rockwell, the creator of Vision Pro, and Federighi. Rockwell currently leads the development of Siri LLM, the internal system that will support the new functionalities.

Apple’s strategy. During Monday’s keynote, Apple chose to highlight Liquid Glass and functional improvements to its operating systems. New features were introduced in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Apple also unveiled advancements in AI, such as language models open to developers and spam call detection. However, there was no mention of the new Siri.

As it stands, there will be no new Siri released in 2025. If all goes according to plan, you might see it in the spring of 2026.
